Gao Zhang – Expert in Commercialization of Natural Products in China and Japan
Mr. Zhang brings in extensive experience in the commercialization of basic research results from life sciences laboratories. Based on his rigorous academic training in biochemistry in China, along with his long-term research experience in Japan covering a broad field of biopharmaceuticals, protein engineering and biomaterial sciences, Mr. Zhang pioneered the establishment of the first biotech incubator in Guiyang (the capital city of Guizhou Province). By utilizing the unique biological and natural resources in Guizhou and working closely with the local government, this incubator has successfully fueled the launch of multiple companies with products targeting the international market, including exporting novel biopharmaceuticals to Japan. In 2008, one of the companies founded by Mr. Zhang, Guizhou Procell Biomaterial, Ltd., was acquired by a local pharmaceutical company.

In 2008,the incubator also formed a unique strategic alliance with academic research institutes in Israel. With significant investment from the Israeli collaborator, the incubator formed the “Israel-Guiyang Incubator and Accelerator”, which provides initial development (seed) funding to startups in the areas of biopharmaceuticals, botanical drugs, functional foods and medical devices.

Mr. Zhang graduated with a B.S. degree in biochemistry from Nanzhou University. From 1998 to 2005 as a JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) research fellow, Mr. Zhang conducted research in the Japan National Institute of Chemistry and Materials, the National Institute for Human and Biomedical Engineering, as well as the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. Mr. Gao is also a recipient of multiple awards from the Japanese government, including the NEDO award (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, 2000-2002), and the JSPS award (The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, 2002-2004).
